Applied Art employees in the 48 Hour Film Project
Aug. 18, 2008
The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which teams make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours. This year, 40 teams participated in Des Moines and over 70 cities world wide were a part of the project.
On Friday night, teams were assigned a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, that must be included in each movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. This year’s assigned items were:
Character – Alan West, Door-to-door salesman
Prop – Blue painter’s tape
Line of dialogue – “What’s it to you, pal?”
Team AAT Underground, led by Scott Kaven, drew historical fiction as a genre. The team consisted of Elisabeth Ballstadt, producer; Tony Wilson, director of photography; Lindsay Donald, make-up artist; and Todd Huffine, grip. The team created “Dick Sell’s,” a short film in which Richard Nixon goes into door to door sales.
Team A Sense of Urgency, led by producer Heather Creswell, drew political drama as a genre. The team consisted of Courtnee Carstens, editor; and Michael Rossow, key grip; as well as writer Chad Baker, of the Meyocks Group. They produced the film “Consensus,” a film in which an inquiry by the Canadian government reveals the population control measures which lead to the dissolution of the United States.
Films were screened at the Fleur Cinema and judged by a panel. Both teams were selected for the Best of City Screening which consisted of the top 12 films produced. “Dick Sell’s received the Best Costumes award. “Consensus” was awarded Best Writing, Best Acting and Best in City Runner-up.
